Mouflon (Ovis aries orientalis)

This species is not native to our country, it comes from the islands of Corsica and Sardinia, this is where it has been carried over from and brought to Europe and overseas. In Hungary, the first animals have been brought to Nyitra County in 1868-69. Today they are living practically all over the area of the domestic mountain ranges, usually in little island-like communities.
The mouflon was settled from Corsica and Sardinia at the end of the last century. The best quality populations live in the Mátra, Budai, Börzsöny, Bükk, Pilis and Vértes mountains. Although the quality of mouflons living in the Zemplén Mountains is only average, they have kept their wildness among the rough conditions characteristic of the area, so the hunting experience is much more interesting.
Their number is determined by the climate, the overseas level, relief, soil and vegetation. The height of our mountain ranges (below 1000 metres) is ideal for the animals. These animals like hard, rocky soils and older woods, where they have a clear vision among the vegetation when grazing. It prefers leafy and coniferous woods, but it’s important for it to always find dry, rocky soil for wearing down the hooves. The mouflon moves around a small area (3-5 km), which is often rough on the environment, when a larger flock is living in a smaller area. Since the mouflon lives in the mountains, it’s hunting requires very good stamina. After the past settlement, the species has been settled in the hilly areas of Somogy County, and many excellent trophies have been shot there.
