Fallow deer hunt
In Hungary, fallow deer hunting begins on the first day of October, when the forests say goodbye to the summer parade of their most glorious colours and show their most beautiful face. This is when you can hear the unique rutting of the fallows bucks, which sounds like constant snoring, and surely warms every hunter’s heart. During the time of rutting you have a good chance of hunting the excited deer stags almost all day long.
Fallow deer (Dama dama)
Ages ago the fallow deer had been indigenous in Europe, but the last ice age caused its extinction here, however, it was preserved in Asia Minor.
Thanks to the resettlement you can find the fallow deer in Hungary again, and adapted very well to the natural conditions of our country again. The European fallow is now resident in all European countries, in North- and South-America, Australia and New-Zealand..
Large number populations live in the forests of Gyulaj – Tamási, at the Upper-Tisza region, province of Békés, Somogy and Pest. The environment of our best stocks are characterised by continental climate, low number of snowy days and low snow level. Due to the formation of its knuckles, it prefers loess, sandy and loose soils. It likes to frequent the leafy forest patches segmented by small agricultural areas with a flat or slightly sloping ground level.
The most excellent population, which has become a legend during the last centuries, boasting a series of world records, is the Gyulaj fallow deer population. In the past few years there has been another fallow stock forming around the North-Eastern part of the Great Plain on the area of Gúth, which can already call some global records its own.

The best and most beautiful way to hunt fallow stags is stalking and hunting from a horse-drawn carriage. During the time of rutting you have a good chance of hunting the excited deer stags almost all day long. Greeting the morning sun from the horse-drawn carriage, continuing the carriage hunt, and bring down a palmer stag, is just the perfect ending to a real hunting experience.
Cull hunting for fallow deer hinds and calves after the rutting period is customarily done from high-stand, by stalking or by carriage hunt, but you can achieve excellent loot by mixed driven hunts as well.

News and tips
The people at Naturhun work on organising hunts every day; they make arrangements with our guests and arrange the hunting areas – they are busy working in the office in one moment and get in their cars to go to the field in the next, and since we would like to record and share our hunting experiences. The only thing I like more than writing blogs is going on hunts. You will see why if you bear with me.
