Roe deer hunt
The open season for the bucks starts on 15th April. Most of our guests choose this period, since this is the best time to get a roe buck on the end of your gun. In terms of hunting, the rut season is a really special period, which lasts from the third week of July to the middle of August. The deer is called with a whistle, creating a special atmosphere during the hunting.
Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus)
Roe deer is widespread in Eurasia. The European Roe deer used to live behind the theoretical border between the Baltics and the Black-Sea on the East, but today, they have migrated towards the area of the Ural-Volga. They can be also found in the southern part of Scandinavia and in Asia Minor and Pre-Asia. Its subspecies living in Hungary, is the most widespread and smallest “big game” in Central-Europe.
The finest population lives along the Rivers Tisza and Körös in the provinces of Szolnok and Békés. The roe deer stock in Dunántúl is substantial, its quality is average. Its main living habitat is the rare tree stock rich in bushes and undergrowth, segmented by fields and meadows. In the early summer it likes to rest on farmlands and on the high grain fields.
Deer trophies hunted in Hungary are among the best in the world, proving the high quality of domestic roe deer management.
Roe deer hunting in Hungary
The open season for the bucks starts on 15th April. Most of our guests choose this period, since this is the best time to get a roe buck on the end of your gun. In terms of hunting, the rut season is a really special period, which lasts from the third week of July to the middle of August. The deer is called with a whistle, creating a special atmosphere during the hunting. The hunter imitates the calling or emergency sounds of the roe doe, and this might even lure the otherwise very careful old bucks close to the rifle. Often it’s not the animal that you expect, which reacts to the call, and sometimes it happens, that bucks, which have been hiding during the whole season are lured out and hunted down. Roe deer are hunted from high-seats, by stalking or by carriage. In the summer it’s possible to combine roe buck hunting with hunting wild ducks and doves, or even wild boar hunting.
In Hungary, the cull hunt for roe-doe begins after the harvest of the agricultural crops has been finished, in the late autumn period. Hunting happens by carriage, by stalking and from high-seats.

News and tips
The people at Naturhun work on organising hunts every day; they make arrangements with our guests and arrange the hunting areas – they are busy working in the office in one moment and get in their cars to go to the field in the next, and since we would like to record and share our hunting experiences. The only thing I like more than writing blogs is going on hunts. You will see why if you bear with me.
